The Vendee globe yacht race starts out at nearby La Sables d'Olonne. This fashionable resort is just 4 miles away and is one of the finest on the West coast. There are an array of shops and restaurants lining the promenade, and water-sports enthusiasts will marvel at the activities on offer at the beach. Taking a stroll away from the seafront, wandering down cobbled shopping streets, you may just find yourself in France's most narrow street.
The Zoo at La Sables d'Olonne is a popular attraction.
Talmont St Hilaire is a medieval town just 20 minutes down the coast. The castle is a visitor attraction and dates back to Richard the Lionheart.
La Rochelle is less than 90 minutes away and is well worth a visit. The beautiful old fishing port remains unspoilt and you can enjoy a cool drink at one of many bistros' along the harbour. From here you can take a boat trip to the fantastically chic
Ile de Re or to the old prison of Fort Boyard.
The
Aquarium at La Rochelle is fantastic and has been described as 'one of the finest on the West coast'.
